Gingerbread Winter Smoothie

Some may think of smoothies only in the spring and summertime.  We whip up delicious smoothies all winter long!  This Gingerbread Winter Smoothie combines the warm spices of cinnamon, cloves, ginger and cardamom with the creaminess of bananas and almond milk.

You will need a blender for this recipe.  If you are just whipping up this smoothie for yourself, you can use a single-serving type of blender like the Nutri-Bullet or similar.  If you are sharing with friends, go ahead and take out the full-sized blender! If you would like, you can also make this a warm drink instead of a cold smoothie.   You will need a stove or cooktop if you will be drinking it warm.   Go ahead and cut your ripe banana into small pieces and add it into your blender with your almond milk, ginger powder, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon and Himalayan salt.   

Himalayan salt is a lot better than the usual table salt you may be used to.  Many people are unaware that common table salt contains chemicals and even sugar!  Himalayan salt is millions of years old, pure and mostly untouched by many of the toxins and pollutants that pervade other forms of ocean salt. It’s definitely the healthier option!

Do you know what is great about all of those spices we just mentioned? They all have wonderful, anti-inflammatory components to them. Especially cinnamon and ginger root!  Inflammation is the root of most disease and illness, so if a food or beverage is naturally anti-inflammatory, it will always provide your body with great benefit!  If you are enjoying the taste of the spices in this recipe, try to fit them into your daily routine!  The benefit to making smoothies at home is that you know exactly what is going in them.  No surprises!

Once you have blended up your smoothie, go ahead and heat it up if you want to drink it warm.  Be sure not to bring it above 40 degrees, as it will destroy the nutrients in the almond milk.   You can also use a different plant-based milk for this beverage if you desire.  Other great milks are cashew milk, coconut milk or even hemp milk.   We are pouring our Winter Gingerbread Smoothies into our Healthy Human Limoncello Cruiser.   They will keep your smoothie cold for over 24 hours or warm for over 12 hours!

Throughout Europe, gingerbread became a symbolic food in many cultures. In the medieval time, gingerbread was primarily known as a delicacy! In 15th-century, gingerbread was taken so seriously that one had to belong to a gingerbread guild in order to bake it. That’s pretty serious!  Only gingerbread bakers had the exclusive right to make it, except at Christmas and Easter. Even today, Germany is still known as the gingerbread capital of the world!

2 cups unsweetened almond milk

1 ripe banana

¼ tsp ginger powder

¼ tsp ground cardamom

¼ tsp ground cloves

¼ tsp ground cinnamon

1 pinch pink Himalayan salt


Place the almond milk, the banana cut into small pieces, the spices and the salt in a blender, and process well until smooth. Pour the smoothie into glasses and sprinkle with cinnamon powder. You can heat it up to 40 degrees (not more, as you don’t want to destroy the nutrients in almond milk), and you have a warming winter drink.
